Recreation & Leisure

Our aim is to provide recreation and leisure supports to persons with disabilities while promoting self-esteem, individuality, peer support and community inclusion.

Participants are presented with opportunities and supports in individual, group and team situations to develop, maintain and enhance the quality of their life through recreation and leisure experiences.

Supports include but are not limited to:

  • Service planning
  • Progress assessment
  • Advocacy
  • Coordination and organization of sports; coaching as required
  • Volunteer recruitment
  • Registration or subsidy application assistance
  • Organization of social events
  • Information and access to Special Olympics
  • Introduction to leisure activities and vacation planning

This support program primarily delivers services in the evening hours and weekends to accommodate participants who are employed or involved with school or other programs and activities during the day. Support is available during the day, when needed, and through the summer for vacation planning.

Basic Admission Criteria

  • An identifiable disability
  • Living in the St. Paul community or surrounding area

Referrals may be made through St. Paul Abilities Network's Residential Support Services director or Recreation Coordinator at (780) 645-3441. Individuals currently being served by SPAN have automatic access to the coordinator and program.

Expenses are dependent on the individual sport, activity, transportation needs and vacation choices. This program is committed to advocating for cost-effective planning that will enable participants to select from a variety of choices in recreation and leisure planning - no mater what their income may be. Payment plans or subsidies may be offered in selected situations.
